Project Overview
Willen Hospice required a comprehensive upgrade to its existing lighting infrastructure to reduce energy consumption, improve safety and compliance, and support the organisation’s longer-term sustainability objectives. The project involved a full transition to LED lighting across the site, alongside targeted improvements to associated electrical systems including circuit rewiring, protective device upgrades and emergency lighting provision.
Works were carefully planned and delivered to ensure minimal disruption to the hospice’s day-to-day operations throughout, reflecting the sensitive and continuously operational nature of the environment.
Scope of Works
The project encompassed a full LED lighting replacement programme combined with a series of electrical infrastructure improvements. The works included:
- Full LED lighting upgrade completed across the site, replacing existing 5ft fittings with more efficient 4ft LED units throughout
- Emergency lighting installed on every other fitting to ensure full coverage and regulatory compliance
- Rewiring of the second corridor circuit to improve reliability and support the new lighting layout
- Breaker upgraded to a B6 RCBO to provide enhanced circuit protection
- Junction box installed to correctly feed hallway lighting
- New low-smoke cabling installed to all fittings in line with current fire safety requirements
- New conduit and back box installed to facilitate two-way lighting control with key switch
Methodology and Site Management
The project was delivered through a structured programme combining LED fitting replacement, circuit rewiring and protective device upgrades in a coordinated sequence. Working across a live hospice environment required a considered and flexible approach, with works planned to avoid any disruption to patient care areas, staff operations or visitors.
The transition from 5ft to 4ft LED units was managed alongside the wider electrical works, with all cabling, conduit and protective infrastructure upgraded in parallel to deliver a complete, future-ready installation rather than a like-for-like swap. This approach ensured that the finished installation met current regulatory standards across all aspects of the electrical and lighting systems.
